Thread: Jemico strop... what is this green stuff on it?

Pretty much that's the question. I picked this double sided paddle stop some time ago, and been using it sporadically. When I first got it I thought it may be CrOx, but judging from the results I get, it is not.

I've tried stropping on the green side first, then on the plain side; on the plain leather and then the green side; on the green side alone and on the leather alone. I must say that they all produce the same results.

It's not like I'd change anything, but I'm just curious what this stuff is and what the purpose intended could be, as I see no advantage to it - and quite honestly, it rubs off on the blade which I find inconvenient.

If it is one of the 'Streichriemen' loom type strops, then it is likely that the green 'stiff' will be CrOx or Dovo Green paste.

It is indeed a loom strop, but it's not old at all. I bought it new a few months ago based on a thread there. It's very doubtful this stuff is CrOx, there's just too much of it (the thing is completely green) and the results are not what one would expect from that stuff.


I'm not at home, but found a picture of it. It's the one all the way to the right, and it's showing it's green side too (or one could say it's the ONLY loom strop there.)



It's that I just don't see a difference between the green side and the natural side, with the exception of the green side dirtying up the blade.

You are quite right, the green side is covered in quite a thick layer - I suspect it is the Dovo Green paste.

The plain leather size has quite a nice feel to it.

That is most likely Dovo green paste.... and if it is,

The Green Paste is the coarsest, with a particle size of 6 microns, and should be worked into strops facing the least sharp blades.

The Red Paste is less coarse, with a particle size of 3 microns, and should be worked into strops sharpening a somewhat dull edge.

The Yellow Paste acts as a daily leather conditioner with no sharpening qualities

The Grey Paste is to be used only for the canvas side of the strop.

I guess I haven't a razor that is dull enough to benefit from that stuff... yet

PhatMan; It took me a bit to get used to it, but I find it a very nice one, although I wish it were larger. I used Stromm conditioner on the bare side and it gave it a very nice feel and a touch more draw which I like. I too bought it with intentions of using it as a travel strop, but since I tend to travel with only carry on I really haven't felt like risking having one of my straights confiscated, so I haven't taken it around. I'm sure soon there'll be a chance.
