Thread: Making Cro Ox Paste

Just got my hands on some Cro Ox powder and want to use it on the hard felt pad on my SRD modular strop.Whats the best way to make the paste ? Can I use water or is mineral oil the way to go How much powder to water or oil?

Mineral oil is the way to go. Use it in a 1:1 ratio. I've never heard of anyone using water with it and I doubt it would work with water.

edit: equal parts CrOx to equal parts mineral oil.

I've used water as the medium just fine.. though my ratio of CrOx to water was a little lower.. maybe 1:2 ?

I use water. Nice thing is, it evaporates, is not messy and leaves behind the abrasive only. You could probably even use rubbing alcohol for the same effect, but faster evaporation.

The liquid is just a carrier like water based paints as opposed to oil based. So really anything that won't harm the substrate will work.

Just make sure the CrO is pure and not intended for other purposes like lapidary work. Some of the stuff (actually most of it sold) contains other things you might not want near your razor.

I find it very important tp create the paste according to its purpose.
I ind that mineral oil based pastes tend to ruin a felt strop, whereas they shine on leather strops.
If I want to apply a polishing powder to felt I use a mixture of water and ethanole.
I only add as much powder as necessary; you can see the mixture turn very green quickly. That usually is enough.
Stirr and mix well before every application!

When I made my balsa bench strop I used mineral oil, which I feel was ideal medium to penetrate the balsa. YMMV for other surfaces.
I wore a medical glove and mixed it with my finger; it's also easier to apply to your stropping surface that way. Add your liquid slowly until you get a "liquid paste" consistency - not too dry, but not runny either. And remember, a little chrome ox powder goes a long way. Just start off with a small amount, otherwise you'll end up making too much paste and waste it.

I used a latex glove aswell for doing this... my finger still came out green :<

I have used mineral oil, neats foot oil, water, always the CrO separates from the solvent.
I have not tryed it but bees wax/mineral oil mix might work very well depending on the application.
