Do you have any tips on how to get the locking collars off without scratching the scales? I'm using a file too but I keep hitting my wooden scales. I've tried putting a thick paper between the scales and the handle, but is there an easier way?

I know that everyone will roll their eyes at this one, but yes Electrical tape over the whole pin, works pretty darn good at this too.... Some people use a Dremel cutoff wheel and cut across the pin like a slotted screw, and that pops the lock washer off, me I was never that good at doing it that way.....

That sounds like the perfect thing to do. Tape is cheap and simple.

I should have looked at this before I tried to fix a DD! Thank You,I learned alot from this.I hope You can help me with a problem I have after repinning this DD. I resized the hole in the blade,expoxied the hole,drilled on a bridgeport mill,as I peened the pin to almost tight,the blade is not centered in the scales,the more I peened the problem grew.

I used a old set of feeler gauges the ones that you take apart. I put the hole over the pin and the rest of the gauge protects the scales during the filling. Ihope this helps someone.

OK a couple of problems could have occurred,

1. The hole you drilled was Straight and the old one wasn't or the reverse..

2. The scales were not straight from the factory and now you are trying to pin them straight.

3. A combination of any/all of these problems..

The razor can be adjusted by how you tap the pins to some extent,, by tapping the pins on the near or far sides of the peen you can move the razor, it can be adjusted at the pivot and the wedge... Try that first...

The blade can really be moved with some careful filing/sanding at the pivot with the scales apart...

Thank you very much for providing great step by step instructions for unpining; it worked exactly as described for me when I removed the scales from my Texas razor. Thank you for the easy to follow directions, I wouldn't have been able to do it without this thread.
