Thread: Pin-tapping question (YouTube)

I have two razors with very loose scales. I'm gonna try to embed a YouTube video that shows what I'm trying to do. Basically, I want to know if I'm tapping too gently or making some other error. Thanks! (pasting the embed code seems to be wrong, so I'll just include the link.)

I suspect you may have to invest in a more suitable hammer though!

1) real hammer and real anvil would make a lot less noise than your current setup.
2) tapping directly on top of the pin won't do as much as tapping around the center of the pin to help mushroom out the peen better.

OK yer on the right track, you can actually tighten a razor with a heavy table spoon...
Here is the only trick I can give you, put yer finger on the pan, hit it with the scoop, right on your fingernail, when it begins to hurt that is the right pressure you should be using.... Many, light taps, are better than Few, heavy taps.... Also what is hard to accomplish with the scoop is targeting the taps, if you actually watch closely in Alex's video or read the guide, I did, you will see that we tap around the head of the pin more so then directly straight down, that would be hard to do with the scoop so just keep tapping, it will work, honest it will.... Unless you are the unluckiest person on the planet and have two razors both with bent pivot pins

I think your spoon may not be giving you the proper amount of pinpoint control. I have been using a small ball peen hammer I purchased in a craft shop for just a couple of bucks. It weighs about four ounces and has been used on many razors with no problems so far. If you can't find one at a local craft or hobby store, here is a website that sells them for $3.39.

mistakes you are making is this
1 st you are not using right tools.
2 nd the biggest is towel take it out.when you hit (you are hitting seems like very smooth ............)
Now please buy hammer and you do have anvil .you will need to have black electric tape.tape top of the pin both side and let hammer stat doing amazing job.you have to hit a little harder then what you done.good luck
Remember just 1 layers of tape both side of the pin,good luck

The towel is the culprit: it absorbs the pressure that should be going into the pins. That keeps the pins from expanding over the washers.

Success! Thanks again for all the excellent feedback. Both razors now have wonderfully tight pin. Here's a 4-minute vid showing how I incorporated everyone's comments (except probably overspending for a ball peen hammer). Thanks again to everybody, and I hope this helps someone else.
