Thread: Razor Bath?

Hello All,

Just wondering if there was some sort of solution that I could put some old razors in to start the cleaning process?

I just won several DE and 3 straights off of eBay, I wanted some practice razors so I could learn to hone and eventually restore. Everything looks pretty dirty and aged so I just wanted to know what to wash them all in without damaging them?

Does baking soda and warm water do anything?

There's a thread here testing molassas that might be of interest to you. It's looking pretty promising for removing rust but I'm not sure about soap scum.

Thanks for replying, I was actually just reading that seems strange to me lol. How does one go about cleaning that off it's so sticky?

I was hoping there was some sort of clean that all the experts did put there?

To clean off molassas I'd expect you'd just use hot soapy water. Should just melt right off. If you're not sure about molassas just soak the gear in hot water with a little dish soap in it.

Most here either sand a blade or buff it. As for something to set and forget maybe try getting yourself a brass tumbler ad putting your blades in there with some walnut and cutting compound.

I may try the molasses, and if not that then I'll try sanding it. Do you guys recommend sanding by hand or with a dremel type tool? do you detach the scales from the razor? if so how?

I like to give old razors a short bath in soapy water and a good scrub with a toothbrush. This helps to get rid of anything flaky and can show you what you have to look forward to with regards to sanding.

Okay that will be my step 1. I like how that sounds, makes perfect sense to me
