Thread: Buffer and proper wheel size

Okay so i paid off my college fee's, and i finally have money to by a cheap buffer, but i have heard good things about it 6" Buffer

but i am not sure what spiral swen cotton wheel size i sound get for ithttp://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/sscw.htm the size of the buffer says 3/8 but i can't find a wheel that fits that size.
also would these compounds be recommendedhttp://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/buffing.htm

Well....take a look again.

It's the mounting holes that are 3/8". That means the 4 holes that you would attach the buffer to the workbench with will accommodate a bolt of up to 3/8" diameter.

The arbor is the spindle where the wheels will attach to. It is most likely 1/2". Failing that, I'm sure you can find bushings somewhere that will enlarge that if you need to.

Casewell sells their wheels in both different diameters (OD - Outside Diameter), such as 4", 6" 8", and they also sell these wheels with different arbor sizes (1/4, 1/2, and 5/8 I believe).

You'll have to specify the arbor size if you'd like something other than their default 1/2".

I'm saying the WHEEL will be 4, 6, or 8 inches in diameter.

The HOLE in the CENTRE OF THE WHEEL, will by 1/4, 1/2 or 5/8".

You will need to know the HOLE in the centre of the wheel when you purchase, or they will just sent you one with a 1/2" HOLE.

The WHEELs you will need will be different sizes, depending on your razor width.

That buffer has a 1/2 inch shaft.

Because of the high speed. I recommend using 4" wheels.
So - look for 4" wheels for a 1/2" arbor.

Use caution when using a high speed buffer. If you move the blade too slow you will get a lot of heat. Too much heat and you will burn the temper of the blade, hence the smaller diameter wheels. Buffers are wonderful things, but they can also rip blades out of your hand and remove finger and skin very easily. Dont ware gloves, may sound odd but the buffing wheels will want to grab gloves and suck your hands into them.
