VCI Paper?
Hi everyone -
A bit of background - The house I'm currently living in down here is a horrible, damp POS. So I, (like many with RAD I presume) live in constant fear of rust. I currently store my razors in a large airtight case (à la pelican), along with a handful of small desiccant packs and two large desiccant cans. Every week I take out all the razors, check them for rust, and reapply either renaissance wax, tuf-glide or camellia oil (on a case by case basis). At the same time all the desiccants (including the tiny bag i keep in each razors box) are dried out in the oven until indicating orange again. All razors are of course totally dry.
Even after all this, I often see alarming brown streaks or spots I have not seen before.
I would love to move house, but I have too many razors to buy
So, I have been researching to see what else I may try, and have (re)discovered VCI paper. For those unfamiliar, VCI papers are 'specially matured kraft -papers impregnated with hi-tech, eco-friendly VCIs (Volatile / Vapour Phase Corrosion Inhibitors)'. They apparently 'work by emitting a protective vapour which condenses on all metal surfaces'. Sounds kind of unpredictable to me. Anyway I haven't figured out a supplier yet, but would consider using it on a wider basis if it has a proven track record within the community.
Now I know JimR wraps razors in it, but was wondering if anyone else has used VCI paper successfully for storing their razors long term? is it safe for gold-wash etc.?
Any thoughts or info appreciated!

Yep I do, and have for about 1 year now, I use this stuff to wrap razors in for shipping.
VCI Paper, Anti Rust Paper in Stock - ULINE
I bought the 8x8 sheets but when I re-order I am going to order 9x9
Supposedly it is fine for long term, but they have "Heavy Duty" rolls that are made for long term also

A certain family member of mine has way more guns than fit in his very large gun safe. He wraps the "extras" in VCI puts them in a plastic sleeve and stores them in his attic under the insulation. He has done this for years and never had a problem with rust on his guns.

Razors no Precision tools yes. Works.
What about Gun Socks. I remember seeing a post that some one has made razor sized gun socks.

I use VCI all the time, and indeed most of the NOS razors I have we're stored with it. I have seen a small correlation between thicker VCI and less corrosion on razors stored 30+ years. Not enough for guarantees, but I'm a believer.

Excellent thread!
I have a few razors that I want to keep for a long time and this issue is important to me. So far I have been using Rig Gun Grease but I would like even better protection so that I can " set & forget" for more than 1 year. What has been the experience of gun owners using vacuum bags?

The Electrochemist
EisenFaust,
Have a look in some Gun shops; Napier here in the UK make (or used to !) a variety of VPI products.
Engineers factors would also be a good place to look (VPI paper used to be used a lot for protecting micromters, gauges eyc that are made from tool steels).
Have fun !
regards
Russ
