    Default Polish Between Grits.....

so ive been doing a bunch of reading on restoration and have a few blades that aren't bad (i.e. no chips, crack, horrid hone wear and made of good steal) that i picked up when i first started to be able to practice honing and was gonna try and polish one or two up before doing that so i have read up on using MAAS and the grit progression when sanding and was just wondering if there was any advantage/disadvantage to using the polish before moving up in grit.

    thanks!!

I personally do not see any advantage of polishing between grits. Say you polish after 400 grit, then you go to 600 grit , all the polish is gone, in this case what is the advantage of the polishing step?

It would be advantageous to the company that makes the polish.

As stated before, there is no reason to polish between grits, but do make sure the blade is completely clean of all old grit residue before moving up. Having a rouge piece of 800 grit scratch a 4000 grit shine is heartbreaking, not to mention time consuming. Also, use a clean rag each time to wipe the blade off. I forgot this piece of advice and now I get to go back to 1000 grit to remove a weird patch of scratches on my custom blade. Don't do what I did. Use a clean rag.
