Thread: Small drill press

Can someone vouch for the dremel drill press? I don't have room for a table top one, I need something that I can set up when I need it and then take it down when done. I have read a lot of bad reviews on the dremel one and the other brands on Amazon. The only thing that I will be using this for is drilling holes in scales for pins. Thanks in advance.

I don't think I'd purchase something made almost entirely of plastic. I asked the same question about two years ago here, and I'm glad I followed people's advice. I didn't get the Dremel attachment.

If you don't have room for a table press, you may want to consider going very very small....and finding a pin vice. Check out Lee Valley Tools

And Charlie Lewis uses one in his video series on how to make scales with minimal hand tools. He used a coping saw, a pin vice, and a small ball peen hammer.

I use dremel to hand drill the pin holes not a big deal, it only requires somewhat steady hand a some practice.
Pin vice works perfectly fine too.

I can't vouch for it, but I got the cheapest model they made. I sold it after my thrid crooked hole, and sacrificed some space for a benchtop drillpress. It doesn't weight much, and you could put it in the closet or something when you don't need it. Mine has become indespensible. It's place is dedicated now. You'll find more uses once you have it probably. Perhaps with a lighter touch, and more patience, I could have made it work, but I'll tell you I'm very, very much happier with my benchtop "real" drillpress.

I think I'll just give it a go and see how I do with just the dremel. I think I'll just practice drilling a few holes before I try it on some scales though. Thanks for the advice.

Forget "making do" with a dremel. Proper and square holes are kind of really important. A bench press isn't much larger than the dremel press and works a heck of a lot better. They can fit in closets and under most/some beds.
