Thread: Peening material stock?

I am just wondering where some of you get your washers and brass bar stock? I have been using brass plated nails and they look nice but was wondering where I could find those little washers locally? Would my hardware store have any washers that small? Or does anyone make there own?

For brass rod stock, I got mine at Hobby Lobby. For the washers, go to Microfasteners. If I remember correctly, for around $5 shipped you will get more washers that you will ever use unless you get bit by the restoring/customization bug.

you're gonna need to buy more than five bucks worth if you spill the little container you keep them in onto the wood chip covered dusty cellar floor like i did.

Yeah I was just wondering what some of you use. I'm not the sort of guy that buys material for specific use such as straight razor pins because you always pay way more for something labeled for a specific use. The brass plated nails I bough work really nice so I think I am going to just buy some sheet metal of the right thickness and make my own washers. Just about always when I see something sold for a specific use it's about 10 times the cost as the stock it was made from. Thanks for the heads up guys, if anyone has any more tips let me know.

I promise that brass rod works better, and Microfasteners makes a much better washer than you'll be able to... just because something costs more does not mean it is overpriced...

That's a definite lack of optimism of ingenuity. You shouldn't doubt someones efforts you don't know. Washers are not that hard to make nicely, plus I think professionally peened brass pins looks nicer to me than mini bolts. So I respectively disagree, where is the can do attitude guys.

Brass rod is pretty cheap anyways. It's made specifically for people who need brass rod though. :P I think it cost me three bucks at Ace Hardware? So i guess if you can get it for 80 cents somewhere, then you'd be right. But I'm no mathematician.

If you are keen to make your own, go for it. Let us know how it goes, and how much $ you saved. I would be interested to see the finished product.

Yes. I am suggesting you use real brass pins. Not escutcheon pins or whatever you're currently jamming in there... There's a big difference between having a can-do attitude, and having a chip on your shoulder.
