5$ was a steal IMO, well worth any effort or $ you put into it. The scales look like they need replaced, not a hard project. Buff the blade up with a soft cloth and some Maas or Simichrome polish, get it honed and she will serve you, your sons and their sons quite well.

Here we go, the finished project. I decided to clean the blade up only with some polish so there is still quite a bit of patina remaining. Since I do not currently have the resources to make my own scales I bought a one piece olive wood scale. I honed up the blade and will attempt to shave with it tomorrow. Even though the scales are a big departure from the original style, I really like the look. What do you all think?

Nice blade! I found a similar one a few yrs. ago with no scales, remains that way still. You made a good choice on the scales.

I attempted to shave with it this morning and it was a no go. Oh well, back to the drawing board... or hones.
