Thread: Rust on a C-Mon

Hey fellas, quick question! I just won a nice C-Mon on the bay for $18 after shipping. It has ugly scales so I'm going to put these beautiful ornate Carl Monkhouse scales I received from a member here at the forum. Is there any way to go about removing the rust with out actually needing to sand? I don't have a buffer either.. any expert advice is appreciated!

No, there is no other way. You might consider sending it out to someone with the requisite skill and tools. A friend of mine said it might take him 10 hours of sanding in progressive grits before he took a blade to the buffers.

As much as I would LOVE to send it to one of the skilled razor restorers, I don't have the money to pay (I know its a lot of work) so I might just have to sand it myself. I guess when I pay for the blade and receive it, I will document my progress in restoring her!

Do a search in 'workshop' and look in SRP libraries, formerly known as the SRP Wiki, for restore tutorials. Bruno had one that showed how to make a sanding fixture out of wood to keep from cutting your hands. Also be very careful with those new scales. If you're not experienced at repinning blades to scales. There are tutorials about that as well. Might do to practice with junk scales if you have any. They crack if you go too strong with the hammer.

is your question "can I restore a razor without doing anything?"

How about those rust converter solution? I have read some people used it before. Does it work? And is it good for the blade?

Rust remover solution is just a marketing gimick. Just get some sand paper from your local auto parts store and start greasing those elbows!!! get a large rag, make a sanding jig so you don't get cut, and sand while watching tv or something and the time will pass quickly...

Alright guys I got the razor this morning and i just finished restoring it tonight when I got home from work. Just did some light sanding and repined her! What do yall think? BTW the original scales were UGLY. It has more of a mirror finish, the camera on my ipad sucks. lol
NOTE: I just want to thank Tom for teaching me how to pin, This pinning came out alright (not perfect but the blade sits fairly centered)
