Anybody have luck buying 'Shave Ready' blades on the bay'

I really slowed my buying, but when I see a nice blade for a decent price, sometimes I can't resist. This last one was a nice Japanese straight was advertised as shave ready. Shave ready can be subjective but not when it pulls and leaves whiskers behind. I have nineteen blades in the drawer probably eight or ten from auctions only two from ebay were truly strop and go. This one will need at least 8k and a coticule to get the edge up to speed. Anyone have better luck?

I've only bought a couple of razors from online auction sites. I don't place any stock in "shave ready" status unless I recognize the seller from the shave forums.

I've never got one from eBay that was shave ready or at least one that would shave me. But then again it could be my technique that's the problem.

I've bought one of your razors a year or so ago. It was 'shave ready' so its not your technique. Don't remember which one but I still have it.

I buy Cymbals for my drums in person and also my straight razors. I prefer ones that need a little work myself.

Never really expect them to be 'shave ready'. That said, two hours later it is shave ready. I set the new bevel with a Shapton 1K. Set the edge with a Shapton 4k followed by a Shapton 8k. Finished this edge with a coticule and a .005 diamond pasted paddle strop. After a nice smooth shave today, it is not only shave ready, but its time to go in the drawer with the other nineteen blades. I think I need to stop before I hit twenty! Nice Japanese blade i'm thinking 1960's vintage. Is that about right?

I am guessing you are a lot like me, this is fun. I wouldn't slow or speed up my buying based on anything other than having fun doing it. I've read your posts and I know you are plenty smart and know everything but I think when it comes to buying these on eBay there aren't a lot of places to buy them at. Duke City vintage shaving has auctions all the time and there is almost always a lot of activity on them probably from a lot of you guys LOL and from what I've seen he's as good as anybody. we are supposed to put our opinion right?

Yes I have had good luck. Razors that I have bought on the bay that had been restored all shaved well. Even a couple that I didn't expect to have an edge only required a little work on my pasted strops.

Just got a Wade and Butcher in ivory scales. The blade had been restored and reset in the scales and to my surprise was delivered with a 'shave ready' smooth edge!

I just received two shave ready razors today from Ebay today. I did know the seller though and had purchased my 1st shave ready razor from him in 2017.

I only bought one razor on ebay that turned out to be shave ready and it was a Henckels. I generally dont care about that in fact they are usually a mess that needs fixing to a degree.

When I get one of the bay I usually re-hone it myself. There are members here I would trust but on eBay most don’t use a straight so they really don’t know what shave ready is.

I would need a definition of, shave ready. as you say it's subjective. if it shaves it's shave ready. LOL I'm not sure if I'm over or under thinking this. maybe they should just say fairly Sharp?

I don't actually shave very much. I just take the blade and run it over my neck and face. I have a few missed spots LOL but to be in a nursing home I'm not complaining

For me shave ready means that I did shave with it. Some people just test a small spot but I shave my face

This might be a topic from another thread, but…you could shave off an 8k edge and I guess it would be shave ready. I wouldn’t want to and the shave wouldn’t meet my expectations. I prefer my razors to be finished @ 15k on an Escher or Jnat. I posit not many EBay vendors have the ability to reach this standard of shave ready.
