I had one of these several years back and I dissolved it. For some reason that I still can't remember I thought that if a little neat's foot oil would refresh the leather of a strop then more would be grand. Well I used a lot of it on my strop and went to bed. When I woke up I found the metal still on the nail and the leather laying on the floor in very small pcs. Oh and it was a great strop. It laid perfectly flat and was great on the razors edge. So I've been looking for one ever since. I finally won this one off the bay. I really can't tell much from the photo but it looks like there are no nicks or cuts. I've got my fingers crossed. It's a Deep-Cut Diamond Russia Back 328.

Is there a Doctor in the house ?
I never had an old red russian, but I have enjoyed the Dovo Red Russian, which I think is no longer made. If I recall correctly, it is a cordovan leather (like a Kanayama), but the Dovo version came with a very fine suede surface (just like the second strop in the three-surface Kanayamas). The trick was not to put anything on it at all, as when you did the fine fibres clumped together and it developed a smooth shiny surface like any other strop.

I learned my lesson with first one I had. The only thing that will go on this one is my hand and razor.

I'm not looking at you !
I've used a small amount of mineral oil. A couple of drops on my fingers and worked it in and that is a regimen that needs repeating every year or so. Otherwise, a little oil from your hands/fingers do a pretty good job also. I have a Dubl Duck horsehide strop w/ canvas and it is a perfect piece of leather for me. Good luck with the new strop.

It came today and well It's ok but a little rough. Just a little. No deep cuts or nicks on the front just not completely smooth. I stropped a razor on it and it strops ok so that's what counts.
