    Newer Penhaligon's Scents?

The newer scents I have tried are dreadful. The last new one I thought tolerable was Quercus. English Fern and Douro are gone, and that is a shame. Their shaving soaps were decent, but like so many good products they are gone too.

From the grind at the shoulder I wonder if it is a half-hollow?

    Swatty

Anyone remember the craze for them back on the Yahoo SRP? Two-line, three-line and even copycats like the Pyke (which became Norton) "American Swaty"? I have one of each and of them, the Pyke is the winner.

    Purpose of Stropping

I use the linen after shaving, mostly to ensure the edge is dry, and leather before shaving. I don't think much sharpening goes on, more aligning any deviations in the blade edge caused by the shave. Dovo used to sell a very mild abrasive white paste (chalk in tallow) to use on linen and I did...

    Current Classics?

The three T's and a few others used to have their creams made (to their own formula) by Creighton's Ltd in Peterborough, but I don't think that is true any more. The creams have been reformulated just like the soaps, and buyers of the modern versions report they are not the same. My stock is all...

    Strop Edges

I must get around to doing this for my Kanayama; the cordovan leather with the shiny finish is "sticky" in the sense that any flip of the razor if it has come to a stop with catch on the strop and make a nick. I did it once before and used some high quality shoe leather products (Safir...

    New Shaving Wisdom

Well I intend to continue to make my soap, hone my razors and do my best to wear out my brushes. I'll never get through all the stocks I have, and I'll certainly never wear out my razors (the oldest of which is looking forward to its 175th birthday soon.) I used to joke that the corruption of...

    New Shaving Wisdom

I'm too old for Reddit, so thank you for exploring it for us. The great wave of wet shaving popularity seems to have moved on and we are now so much flotsam in its wake. If the investors and their marketers had not jumped on the three T's and other traditional products and ruined them for a...

    AOS Thiers Issard On Sale

I think you're right, but somewhat misleading to describe a razor as stainless but you didn't mean the blade! You have to know that TI have never made a stainless blade.

    AOS Thiers Issard On Sale

And this is why you don't buy from AOS: it's advertised as a stainless steel razor. Now look at the picture: "Carbon Steel" it says!

    first straight shave in months

The box used to hold a very old diagnostic set (otoscope/ophthalmoscope) and I made the lining and dividers with some velvet, cardboard, cotton wool and glue!

    Shavette

A shavette is attractive when you are having honing problems, but requires a skilled and gently touch to use without cuts and nicks. If it is your intention to stick with one and you don't want a flimsy bit of stamped steel, the Feather AC is the best.

    What Did You Hone Today?

Shaving every other day, I just got through all the Zowada damascus blades. I'm going to stick with them until some other itch comes along. But there is some unfinished business: I honed my TI Super Gnomes with a coticule, but looking back I have previously found the Spyderco makes such lovely...

I've been gone for time to catch up

Rog! Welcome back! I was wondering where you'd gone. You poor devil, that's a nasty experience. Once you get rid of the G-tube you'll be able to sleep properly and things will get better. You're going to have a pile of new vaccines to get as part of life without a spleen. But to get to the...

    What Did You Hone Today?

Having got the half-hollows as I like them I moved on. It's been nearly three years since I last honed and used the Zowada damascus razors: So I have so far used two, and did nothing other than strop them. If I thought the TI half-hollows were good, these are showing me all things are...

    What Did You Hone Today?

Blasted eBay razor is a disaster. It's been honed to death, unsuccessfully, as it's as blunt as a butter knife. It's now 4/8 instead of 5/8 and has been turned into an irregularly curved smile. I've had four goes at honing it on narrow hones with x-strokes and it still won't cut. "Shave ready"...
