The beauty of using films, stones, and diamond is that it does not require much in the way of years of skills development. Just use them and shave the whole face with the result the same as a manufactured edge.

The Simpson 59 is a terrific brush from the Grey Box era. Best badger hair then is, imo, superior to the best badger available (or what is harvested) today. The Dovo came to me with a very fine edge. Naturally over time it has needed refreshing and I am contemplating going back to my Norton 4/8k and progressing through my Shapton 16k. Still gave a pretty good shave today, but I had to work too hard to get it. Maybe I'll start on my Naniwa 12k and Shapton and evaluate the results. Feels good in the hand, I must say.
I have geard the differrence between the 12k and 16k is very little and hard to notice, I would like a 20k... But that may be overkill with all the pastes and diamond sprays we now have, I do a 12k then maybe a arkie or a escher....again just depending on the steel and how ot feels and looks through a loupe

My brand new (to me) Restored Barclay Bros. (Germany.)
The model name stamped on the blade (almost worn smooth) is "Finest India Steel" (I needed a loupe to read it.)
